A labor-backed Democrat rejects a $15/hr wage -- And some bookmarks

Rep. Dan Lipinski sat down at the editorial board offices of the Chicago Sun-Times this weekend with his primary challenger, Marie Newman. This is a race we've been following closely because Lipinski is one of the few sitting Democrats in the House being challenged seriously in a primary, and Newman has the backing of two House Democrats from Illinois (Luis GutiƩrrez and Jan Schakowsky) as well as a slew of national progressive groups.

He would have little chance in the primary if it weren't for the support he has from labor, and Lipinski is now testing the limits of how far he can push his politics to the right and not lose union backing, which he inherited, along with his seat, from his father. It's a test of whether the 23rd Ward machine is stronger than the grassroots uprising within the Democratic Party.

We got audio of the joint interview with the Sun-Times, and our story is here.

TYT hosted a townhall in the Capitol with Bernie Sanders on Medicare for all. Here's my post-game analysis, which includes some criticism of how he addresses the cost aspect. (My argument is that he cedes too much ground to critics, and is too conservative on that part.)

And two pieces to bookmark to read when you have time:

A staggering feat of journalism from May Jeong, the story of a four-year-old girl who was the lone survivor of a drone strike. I don't want to ruin it, I'll just say it's very much worth your time, I can't recommend it enough.

And a fascinating look, from Maryam Saleh, into the story of a young man caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting, which got him erroneously added to a gang database in Chicago -- which then had ICE troopers banging on his door. In what is supposed to be a sanctuary city.

Or you can support it by buying a copy of Out of the Ooze: The Story of Dr. Tom Price or Wall Street's White House, the first two books put out by Strong Arm Press, a small progressive publishing house I cofounded.
