Secret audio of Steny Hoyer

It's one thing to know how politics works, it's another to be a fly on the wall and get to watch it play out in back rooms in real time. That's a bit of what we have today, as Steny Hoyer, the number two Democrat in the House, sat down with Levi Tillemann, a progressive Democrat running for a House seat in Colorado.

Tillemann was pushing Hoyer to get the party to stay neutral in the primary. Hoyer, meanwhile, was pushing Tillemann to get out of the primary. And Tillemann was recording the whole thing. Lee Fang obtained the audio and we published that conversation -- along with a dramatic, cartoon rendering -- here.

Speaking of how our democracy works, Shaun King is reporting that law enforcement groups in Sacramento gave more than $400,000 to the district attorney who decided not to charge them with the murder of Stephon Clark. She's now up for reelection. If you want to get involved with that campaign, you can do that here.

I'm the Washington bureau chief at The Intercept, and I send this several times a week. If you want to contribute directly to help keep the thing running, you can do so here, though be warned a donation comes with no tote bags or extra premium content or anything. Or you can support it by buying a copy of Schoolhouse Wreck: The Betsy DeVos Story, Out of the Ooze: The Story of Dr. Tom Price or Wall Street's White House, the first three books put out by Strong Arm Press, a small progressive publishing house I cofounded. See upcoming titles here.
