7 Science-Backed Ways To Get Over An Ex
While vices ― like a pint of ice cream or a night out ― can ease the pain in the short term, there are a few science-backed tricks to help get over an ex for good. Below are several healthy ways you can boost the healing process, according to research on the subject.
1. Listen to sad music.
There’s a reason Adele is so magnetic after heartbreak. Research shows your brain is drawn to sad music. A 2014 study found that listening to sad music can prompt positive emotions like peacefulness in the listener, which could explain why you’re drawn to it after a breakup.
2. Reflect on your breakup.
Research suggests that taking the time to actually think about your split may help you heal from the pain quicker. The study found that those who thoughtfully reflected on the motivation for finally ending the breakup over the course of nine weeks had an easier time accepting the breakup. The person also felt less lonely.
3. Hang with your BFF.
Admit it, your true other half is your best friend ― and spending some quality time with that person post-split can help you feel better. Research shows that hanging with a close friend can reduce stress in the body, something you’re likely feeling right after you end your relationship.
4. Focus on the positives of the split ― then let yourself grieve.
Did your significant other argue unfairly? Do you miss having single nights out with your friends? Focus on the silver linings of the dissolution. Research shows an optimistic attitude can lead to a higher quality of life.
Prince Harry Got Tested For HIV Live On Facebook
Prince Harry is promoting the importance of HIV testing, one quick finger prick at a time.
The royal visited Guys and St. Thomas’ Hospital in London on Tuesday to get tested live on Facebook in an effort to highlight how simple and painless the experience can be for individuals. The instant test, which lasted all of one minute, involved pricking the prince’s finger for a drop of blood, which was then checked for either being reactive or non-reactive right there on the spot.
Prince Harry joins other influencers, like Miss Universe, who are working to slam the stigma and fear associated with HIV testing. It is estimated that 17.1 million people who are infected with HIV are not aware of their diagnosis, and thus are not receiving the proper treatment and could potentially be putting others at risk. Research shows that early diagnosis of HIV can help an individual better manage the virus.
U.S. Beer Brands Are Adding Nutrition Labels To Cans And Bottles
Ever wondered how many calories are in your beer can? Soon, you’ll know right away.
Some of the country’s biggest beer brands including Budweiser, Coors and Heineken and have agreed to start labeling their beers with nutrition facts.
The new labels will include calories, carbohydrates, protein, fat and alcohol by volume. Brands will also publish an ingredients list and freshness date either on their packaging or online.
Of course, some beer brands already include calorie counts on their cans. But the new round of labels will up that number to more than 80 percent of all beer sold in the U.S. Companies should have their new labels in place by the end of 2020.
The Graveyard Shift Might Actually Turn You Into A Corpse
Sorry, night workers.
The graveyard shift can do a whole lot of damage to your waistline. Working nights ups your risk of diabetes, cancer and heart disease. And you probably know all too well that it’s a total buzzkill when it comes to your social life.
Now, a new study has documented how quickly shifts in your schedule can actually damage your heart.
Sleeping only five hours a night can raise your heart rate the next day. And getting those five hours of sleep during the day, rather than at night, raises your heart rate even more ― and impairs other measures of heart health, too.
Making other healthy lifestyle choices ― like eating right, exercising and trying to get enough sleep when possible ― can help counteract these negative effects.
