Despite all of your Pokemon Go jokes, the Turkish military still launched a coup today. Donald Trump announced that he has chosen a police composite sketch of a white suspect as his running mate. And the Trump/Pence campaign unveiled its logo, which highlights its message of Republican unity and also what happens when a mommy and a daddy love each other VERY MUCH. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Friday, July 15th, 2016:

TURKEY’S MILITARY DECLARES COUP - Sophia Jones in Istanbul: “The Turkish military announced late Friday that it had taken over the country, triggering confusion and terror across the nation. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim announced that an attempted military uprising was ongoing during a broadcast on the NTV television. Turkey would never allow any ‘initiative that would interrupt democracy,’ he vowed. ‘Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command,’ Yildirim also said.” [HuffPost]

TRUMP PICKS PENCE, HAD BEEN ON FENCE - Dave Jamieson: “Donald Trump is famous for decisively firing people. But according to multiple reports on Friday, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee tried and failed to fire his own running mate ― all before he’d even formally announced who he was. CNN’s Dana Bash and NBC News’ Kelly O’Donnell both reported that Trump got cold feet Thursday night over his apparent veep choice, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence. According to Bash, Trump was ‘so unsure’ about his offer to Pence that ‘around midnight last night, he asked aides if he could get out of it.’ O’Donnell tweeted that the real estate mogul was on the phone late into the evening on Thursday, ‘asking if he could change course on VP pick.’ A Trump campaign spokesman flatly denied those assertions.” [HuffPost]

PENCE A CLASSIC CAPITOL HILL ‘WINGER - Jake Sherman and John Bresnahan: “It’d be a stretch to call Mike Pence the attack dog Donald Trump said he wanted. But the Indiana governor, Trump’s choice for vice president, definitely had a flair for the dramatic during his dozen years in the House of Representatives, using the kind of soaring — and at times searing — rhetoric he honed as a talk radio host…. Once, during a closed-door House Republican Conference meeting, Pence went so far as to liken the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Obamacare to the 9/11 attacks…. A free trade backer who voted for the Iraq invasion, Pence amassed a profile in Congress that makes him an ideological foil to the presumptive nominee.” [Politico]

FORMER ROMNEY ADVISOR DAN SENOR, via Twitter: “It’s disorienting to have had commiserated w/someone re: Trump - about how he was unacceptable, & then to see that someone become Trump’s VP”

EVERYONE WAS MAKING FUN OF THIS LOGO TODAY:

@BrendanBuck: Is the logo real?

NEWT GOES NUTS - Nick Visser: “Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a short-list finalist to be Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate, said Thursday that Muslim-Americans should be ‘tested’ and deported if they ‘believe in Sharia’ law. ‘Western civilization is in a war,’ Gingrich told Fox News’ Sean Hannity, hours after a truck mowed down French Bastille Day celebrants in Nice, killing at least 80. ‘We should frankly test every person here who is of a Muslim background, and if they believe in Sharia, they should be deported. Sharia is incompatible with Western civilization.’” [HuffPost]

Poor Newt. He wanted to be vice president and all he’s left with is his millions in debt from his 2012 campaign.

HILLARY’S VP: THE LEFT WANTS WARREN, BUT REALLY DOESN’T WANT KAINE - Greetings from St. Louis, where at Netroots Nation 2016, all the men are strong, the women good looking, the children above average, the panels intersectional and almost literally everyone a “rock star.” Activists we’ve spoken to are happy with Hillary’s Bernie-induced shift to the left ― in particular her adoption of his goal of debt-free college ― but many still are still anxious about her VP pick, and say Tim Kaine could sap the left’s enthusiasm for the ticket in November. Asked about a Clinton/Kaine ticket, Alan Grayson let out a disdainful chuckle, “What can I say? I worry he’s well to the right of the mainstream Democratic Party.”  Sen. Jeff Merkley, after praising Elizabeth Warren and Sherrod Brown, offered “no comment” on Kaine, other than to say he is a “capable lawmaker.”  Added Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee: “An energizing vice presidential pick will get millions of people to not just vote, but volunteer and give money ― as opposed to merely showing up on election day.”

Also, sad to say, there isn’t much Vilsack chatter here.

DELANEY DOWNER - Do people not remember that Donald Trump is a birther who says vaccines cause autism? Sam Levine: “A California couple that worked as spokespeople to promote RV travel for nearly two decades were suddenly fired last month for speaking out against presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump. The Recreational Vehicle Industry Association had paid Brad and Amy Herzog to travel and give television interviews about RVs across the U.S. for the past 17 summers. They received the industry’s Spirit of America award for their dedication in 2006. The couple were six days into a 50-day swing through the West under contract with RVIA and had given a handful of television interviews when they launched a Kickstarter campaign on June 28 raising money for an anti-Trump book. Amy Herzog illustrated the adult picture book, D is for Dump Trump: An Anti-Hate Alphabet, featuring 26 short poems by her husband.” [HuffPost]

 JOE WALSH’S TWITTER TERROR REVISITED -  Liz Adetiba: “Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) wrote to Attorney General Loretta Lynch Friday asking her to investigate a tweet by a former congressman, arguing that it constitutes a ‘terroristic threat’ against President Barack Obama.  After last week’s tragic attack on Dallas police officers, former Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) tweeted that Obama and Black Lives Matter activists need to ‘watch out’ for ‘Real America.’ ‘Threats of any kind against the President or ordinary Americans are unacceptable. This particular statement bears significant weight because of Walsh’s position as a high-profile former Member of Congress. As such, Mr. Walsh’s refusal to renege on the statement could result in real violence against the President or the Black Lives Matter movement,’ Ellison wrote.” [HuffPost]

 DUMP TRUMP EFFORT BOMBS - S.V. Date and Igor Bobic report from Cleveland: “Republicans’ last realistic chance to deny Donald Trump their presidential nomination fizzled Thursday, as a key rules change proposal failed to get enough votes to reach the convention floor next week. Leaders of the Free the Delegates group needed 28 votes of the 112-member Convention Rules Committee to force the full Republican National Convention to consider their ‘conscience clause.’ Instead, the most group leader and Colorado delegate Kendal Unruh could muster was about 21.’Donald Trump is the presumptive nominee. There should be absolutely no question as to who we vote for,’ said Arizona delegate Bruce Ash. How many votes Unruh had exactly isn’t known, because she failed to demand a recorded vote before the chairman ruled it closed. On a previous vote by Trump supporters to shut down debate on her proposal, the vote was 77-21.” [HuffPost]

 BAD REVIEWS FOR OBAMA TOWN HALL ON POLICE - Julia Craven: “President Barack Obama participated in an ABC News town hall on Thursday to discuss racism and police brutality, but many viewers saw it as a missed opportunity, saying there wasn’t nearly enough emphasis on the need for comprehensive police reform… The goal of the conversation was to address the black community’s relationship with police following the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, two black men who were shot and killed by police last week in Louisiana and Minnesota, respectively. But to some viewers, the discussion seemed to focus too much on what black people can do to avoid being targeted by law enforcement, and not enough on the need to shift police culture and hold officers accountable for excessive force. Patrisse Cullors, a co-founder of Black Lives Matter who attended the town hall, told The Huffington Post the event was a ‘shit show.’ ‘It was honestly one of the worst experiences you could’ve put families through,’ she said.” [HuffPost]

ERIC GARNER’S DAUGHTER DISSED - Lilly Workneh: “The daughter of Eric Garner, the man who died two years ago after New York City police placed him in a chokehold, walked out of an ABC News taping of a town hall with President Barack Obama Thursday in protest, saying network producers broke a promise to highlight her questions. Erica Garner is now denouncing the session on race, saying she was ‘lied to’ and was ‘railroaded’ by ABC producers who ignored her questions for the president. ‘ABC is using black lives as a rating and to get paid,’ Garner told HuffPost in an exclusive video statement. ‘They guaranteed me that I would be asking the president direct questions about what’s going on. I was lied to.’” [HuffPost]

ICYMI: Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) delivered a series of speeches on the Senate floor this week, including one that detailed his own mistreatment by police ― even the Capitol police.

RENEGADE REPUBLICANS ENDORSE SOCIAL SECURITY TAX HIKE, GET THE HELL OUT OF WASHINGTON - In an unusual move, a small group of House Republicans has endorsed higher taxes as part of a bipartisan strategy to improve the long-term financing of Social Security retirement insurance.  ‘It’s the only bipartisan bill on Social Security reform that’s in the Congress right now,’ said bill author Rep. Reid Ribble (R-Wis.), speaking on the HuffPost Politics podcast ‘So That Happened.’ Joined by four other Republicans and one Democrat, Rep. Jim Cooper of Tennessee, Ribble unveiled the legislation at a press conference outside the Capitol this week ― just before Congress adjourned for the rest of the summer. It’s highly uncommon for Republicans to endorse any kind of tax increase, even if it’s paired with benefit cuts. It’s probably not a coincidence that Ribble and all of his GOP co-sponsors are leaving Congress at the end of this term. [HuffPost]
