810 People Have Died In Jail Since Sandra Bland

Over the past year, there have been so many stories of violence and injustice in America, and even the most well-known deserve to be revisited. Sandra Bland is one

The Huffington Post gathered names, causes of death, dates of arrest and death, and other data for more than 800 people who died in jails and police lockups in the year following Sandra Bland’s death on July 13, 2015.

Here are the 810 people (and counting) who have lost their lives in jail in the year after Sandra Bland died.

Tensions ran high on Sunday when a protester confronted a Fox News reporter about the realities of police violence towards black Americans.

In addition to praising Fannie Lou Hamer, Angela Davis, Assata Shakur and other women of the movement, the rapper honored “everyday women” like Diamond Reynolds, who courageously documented her boyfriend Philando Castile’s last moments after he was gunned down by a cop.

Black women, we see you. We love you. We are with you and we believe in your leadership.”

In the wake of the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, Black Lives Matter supporters are finding creative ways to make sure the movement is acknowledged everywhere.

In the past few days, more and more people have changed their names so that everyone in their local Starbucks hears the words “black lives matter.” Some customers ― and employees ― have documented it on social media

Who says there’s only one way to protest?

The teen son of Alton Sterling ― a black man fatally shot by police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana ― said his father was a “good man” and called on peaceful protests throughout the country.

In a press conference on Wednesday, 15-year-old Cameron Sterling made an emotional plea to those protesting his father’s death.

“I want everyone to protest the right way ― protest in peace,” Cameron said. “Not guns, not drugs, not alcohol, not violence.”
