Starbucks' Granita Will Be Your Go-To Summer Drink
Starbucks has tried its hand at a number of warm-weather drinks over the years. There are, of course, Frappuccinos and Refreshers, to start with. And most recently, it even released a brand new nitro cold brew. But none have tickled our summertime-loving-senses quite like this before.
Ladies and gentlemen, we give you ... Starbucks granitas.
Yes, the beloved coffee chain has introduced shaved ice beverages as part of its new “sunset menu,” which debuted yesterday and is available at participating Starbucks after 3 p.m. daily throughout the summer.
The icy, sweet treats come in three flavors: Youthberry White Tea, Strawberry Lemon Limeade and what sounds like is going to be our personal favorite, the Caramel Espresso granita, made with espresso, cream and a caramel drizzle.
At 19 grams of sugar for the caramel, 25 grams for the white tea and 30 in the strawberry lemon limeade (for the brand’s “tall” 12-ounce size), the granitas aren’t much of a healthier option than a 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola, which has 39 grams of sugar. So while we wouldn’t recommend drinking one every day, they’re still an alcohol-free alternative to those oh-so-trendy ombré wine slushies that have sent the internet into a frozen-drink induced frenzy.
Signs Your Partner Is Too Selfish For A Relationship
Not everyone you find yourself attracted to is necessary cut out for a relationship. Unfortunately, some people have a long way to go until they’re compassionate and selfless enough to give out genuine love.
Below, therapists and other relationship experts share seven signs the person you’re seeing is too self-centered for a long-term relationship.
1. They care more about your career than your character.
If you never feel quite good enough for your partner — and she’s much more interested in what you do than who you are — consider it a big, glaring red flag.
2. You feel controlled by their many rules.
People with narcissistic personalities put high expectations on others — and when you fail to meet those expectations, judgement almost always follows.
3. Your partner prioritizes “me” over “we.”
Your partner should value your opinion, embrace a team mentality and consider the collective couple when making decisions.
4. They sabotage your success.
A narcissistic personality will share the spotlight, but only up to a point. The second your success starts to overshadows his there’s bound to be trouble.
5. They never ask, “How was your day?”
Getting home and ranting to your partner about subway outages and your crappy workday is one of the great joys of life. You deserve someone who not only asks, “how was your day, honey?” but actually listens to what you have to say, even if your response is 90 percent complaining.
6. They talk over you.
Good luck getting a word in edgewise; a self-centered partner seems to enjoy the sound of her voice a lot more than yours.
7. You have to beg your partner to do things you want to do.
Compromise is essential in any healthy relationship. It should worry you if your partner doesn’t care about your opinion, isn’t willing to take “no” for an answer or guilt trips you into making decisions.
You Won’t Believe How Many Vacation Days America Wasted Last Year
It’s no secret that workers in many other countries get significantly more vacation days than Americans do. But what’s truly shocking is how Americans fail to use the few vacation days they do get.
In fact, Americans who earn vacation days wasted a record-setting 658 million of those vacation days last year, according to a recent survey. Did you hear that, y’all? SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY-EIGHT MILLION vacation days, simply left on the shelf to rot.
The same study found that 55 percent of U.S. employees left at least some of their vacation days unused last year.
Around a third of workers took absolutely ZERO vacation days in the last year, a recent HuffPost/YouGov poll confirms.
Interestingly, changes in vacation habits aren’t linked so much to the economy as they are to our ever-increasing dependence on technology. The research shows that as people become more tied to their phones and email, it becomes harder to pull away from the office.
But there’s a simple way to reverse the problem, says Katie Denis, program director at Project: Time Off.
“We’re not going to ‘find’ time anymore,” Denis says. “It’s about making time, or being intentional about our time.”
8 Reasons You Can’t Get Rid Of Your Belly Fat
1. You’re eating enough protein, but not the right kind.
Lean protein curbs unnecessary noshing by helping you feel fuller and builds lean muscle that burns calories even when you’re not exercising. Most of us meet our daily protein requirements, but we’re not always getting it from lean sources like fish, chicken, turkey, and vegetarian sources like beans and legumes. Instead, we’re picking red meat and cheeses.
What to do about it: Focus on lean proteins and aim to eat about 1 gram of protein per day for every 2.2 pounds you weigh.
2. Your fitness routine is lopsided, either all about cardio or all about strength training.
A combination of strength training and cardio gets rid of the most belly fat, found a large review of the research.
What to do about it: Build a fitness routine around both, and make sure it includes a couple of high-intensity interval (HIIT) sessions per week.
3. You’re doing cardio and strength training to burn fat all over your body, but in the meantime, your core routine is the standard plank, held for a longtime.
A static plank (i.e., just holding steady, on your hands or forearms) should be one of many ab moves in your arsenal—not the only one. By adding movement to your plank, you become less stable, and your abs have to work harder to maintain your balance.
What to do about it: Do shorter planks, focusing on versions that include movement to challenge your core more.
4. You’ve got an autoimmune condition.
A lot of medications have weight gain as a potential side effect, but corticosteroids like prednisone and cortisone lead to pounds in your stomach.
What to do about it: Ask your doctor if there are other medication options the two of you haven’t discussed.
5. You’ve cleared your cabinets of anything that isn’t low-fat.
Many low-fat processed foods are high in sugar, and you might not know that sugar makes you pack on pounds in the midsection specifically. But equally important is the fact that certain fats—the mono- and polyunsaturated kinds—can actually help you lose abdominal fat.
What to do about it: Eat more poly- and monounsaturated fats in foods like nuts, olives and olive oil.
6. Your days are jam-packed, and there isn’t always time for breakfast.
Skipping meals doesn’t just slow down your metabolism—research in mice suggests it can lead to weight gain in your stomach, specifically.
What to do about it: Aim to eat every few hours to keep your metabolism revved up.
7. Between work and home (and every other thing you’re responsible for), you’re stressed.
Stress increases cortisol levels, and cortisol likes to store weight in your stomach. It could also slow down your metabolism.
What to do about it: If you can disconnect from work once you leave the office, do it—any mental health expert will tell you that you need time away from your smartphone to decompress.
8. You’re through menopause, but now you’ve got this extra weight in your midsection.
When your estrogen levels drop, the fat cells in your belly rev up their ability to remove fat from your bloodstream and store it before you can work it off.
What to do about it: Get moving. It’s easier to gain weight after menopause, but research suggests it’s also easier to lose it.
