Patience Carter is one of the victims who survived the massacre at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, on Sunday, which took the lives of 49, mostly people of color, and injured 53 more.
During a press conference yesterday in which victims talked about their horrific experience at the LBGTQ nightclub, Carter recited a poem, which she wrote from her hospital bed to cope the night before at Florida Hospital. Though she said she is grateful to be a survivor, Carter said this comes with a great weight.
“The guilt of feeling grateful to be alive is heavy,” the 20-year-old said, hands trembling. “Wanting to smile about surviving, but not sure if the people around you are ready as the world mourns the victims killed and viciously slain. I feel guilty about screaming about my legs in pain because I could feel nothing like the other 49 who weren’t so lucky to feel this pain of mine.”
When it comes to haters, First Lady Michelle Obama just doesn’t listen to them.
During a conversation with Oprah Winfrey at the United State of Women summit in Washington on Tuesday, the first lady said she’s learned to tune out people who criticize her online.
“Well, when it comes to social media — there are just times I turn off the world, you know. There are just some times you have to give yourself space to be quiet, which means you’ve got to set those phones down,” she said. “You can’t be reading all that stuff. I mean, that’s like letting somebody just walk up and slap you, you know? You would never do that. You would never just sit there and go, slap me in the face and I’m good with it. No. So why would you open yourself up to that?”
Just two days after Omar Mateen used a semi-automatic rifle to murder 49 innocent people and injure dozens more, we were able to purchase an AR-15 — a rifle similar to Mateen’s that has been used in several other mass shootings on American soil — in less time than it takes to buy a cart full of groceries.
The ease with which we purchased our AR-15, a Vietnam-era gun hailed by the military as being the perfect killing machine, was surreal. This, despite the fact that Florida Gov. Rick Scott had declared a state of emergency in Orange County, which includes Orlando.
Semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15 have been used in several of the most deadly shooting rampages in the United States in recent years, even before the attack in Orlando. The killers behind the mass shootings in San Bernardino, California, the elementary school at Newtown, Connecticut, and the movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, all used AR-15s.
This week Beyoncé made GOOD on her promise to provide aid for those who were affected by Flint’s water crisis.
Prior to concluding the North American leg of her “Formation” world tour in Detroit, Michigan, on Tuesday Bey’s management and entertainment company, Parkwood Entertainment, in partnership with her philanthropic platform, BeyGOOD, presented a $82,234 check to the United Way of Genesee County to support the residents of Flint, Michigan.
Bey’s latest benevolent gesture follows her 2015 humanitarian efforts in commemoration of World Humanitarian Day, where she launched the BeyGOOD T-shirt to raise funds for those affected by Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake.
