What Does The Brexit Mean For Americans Traveling To Europe?​

The United Kingdom voted Thursday to leave the European Union. While the actual process of withdrawing from the EU will take years, the vote sent immediate shockwaves across Britain’s economy and political sphere. How will the Brexit affect Americans traveling to Europe this summer?

Travel to the U.K. could be cheaper.

In the wake of Thursday’s vote, the British pound hit a 30-year low. Currently it costs $1.37 American dollars to get one pound, down from $1.50 on Thursday. While this is terrible news for Britons, it’s good news for Americans if the dollar continues to surge

Travel to Europe from the U.K. might be pricier.

If you’re planning on country-hopping through Europe after your visit to Britain, be prepared for higher airfares. Discount airlines like RyanAir and EasyJet keep prices low in part due to an open skies policy in Europe. Now that Britain is exiting the EU, these airlines will likely have to deal with new, more restrictive air service agreements, which could ultimately lead to more expensive flights.

Travelers could be in for a major headache with longer U.K. customs lines.

At London’s Heathrow airport and other U.K. ports of entry, customs lines move relatively quickly due to EU citizens’ ability to enter through a separate line without any restrictions. When the Brexit is in effect, EU travelers could potentially join Americans (and everyone else) in one big line for non-U.K. citizens. 

Ultimately, we’re all in for a rough stock market ride.

While the Brexit vote might have a few upsides for Americans traveling to Britain, stock market volatility is still a major concern. Over the next few days, expect to see a major rebalancing of currencies as investors’ confidence in the EU and Britain wavers.

Below, marriage therapists offer their best advice for becoming less suspicious in your relationship. 

1. Figure out why you’re jealous. 

The first step to becoming less jealous is to recognize why you feel the way you do.  Have you always considered yourself the jealous type — or is there a specific betrayal you’re trying to come to grips with from the past?

2. When you feel insecure, tell your partner. 

There’s no point in keeping your emotions bottled up. When something triggers your spidey sense, mention it — but don’t assign blame. 

Try to express your feelings of jealousy and insecurity without accusing your partner of wrongdoing. That approach is a lot more constructive than confronting your partner with anger.

3. Recognize when jealousy is called for and when it isn’t.

The next time you flip out over another girls’ night out, ask yourself if there’s really cause for alarm or if you’re allowing insecurities to get the best of you. 

If your partner isn’t doing anything inappropriate but you’re still feeling jealous, figure out what triggers you. If you make a request of your partner — say, asking them to send a check-in text at some point during the evening — let them know you’re aware that the issue lies with you and they’ve done nothing wrong.

But here’s the good news: Hairston suspects it’s the process of procrastination that leads to sleep troubles. The culprit behind your trouble in bed may be the negative energy you spend worrying about that totally blank word document or unresolved email chain. It’s likely that those pangs of “I should have done that already” weighing on our conscience add to sleep trouble.
