The 16th Annual BET Awards aired on Sunday and it was lit for so many reasons.
The night was filled with special moments that reminded us how hilarious, magical and talented black artists are. Between the dope performances, reminders to stay woke and the ultimate ode to Prince, the event was one to remember. In case you didn’t see the show or just want to relive it, here are 14 moments that made the 2016 BET Awards truly unforgettable.
On Sunday, Jesse Williams received the Humanitarian Award at the 16th Annual BET Awards and delivered a powerful speech that highlighted racism in America.
Williams, who also helped to produce a documentary on Black Lives Matter, frequently uses his celebrity status as a platform to spread awareness about racial issues and to critique the portrayal of black lives by the media.
Here are 34 powerful quotes that show the wisdom Williams has amassed over the years.
Stay woke.
Many celebs were moved by Jesse Williams' speech, including Justin Timberlake, who tweeted about how inspiring it was -- only to later unintentionally reveal that he completely missed what Williams was saying.
The entire point of Jesse Williams speech was that we live in a society where we are not treated as though we are all the same. It’s easy for Timberlake, no matter how well-intentioned, to dismiss a very valid critique by trotting out the same, tired, colorblind approach to race. He was essentially saying: “Realize I’m the same as you, be nice to me, then we can talk.” And yet, the onus should not be on black people to accommodate white feelings in order to “have a conversation.”
As Jesse Williams said last night, “Stop with all that.”
This Sunday’s highly anticipated BET Awards boasted lots of fantastic performances from the likes of Beyoncé, Erykah Badu and Desiigner. But the stars for this year’s show were bringing heat not just to the stage, but to the red carpet, too.
Everyone from Gabrielle Union to host Tracee Ellis Ross came out with looks that were sleek, chic and just a little daring. Perhaps the best look of the night came from Janelle Monae in a striped black-and-white suit which she told red carpet host Llyod Boston that she chose the ensemble because it’s a look she thinks Prince would have liked — or even worn.
Here are all the best looks from the BET Awards red carpet — let us know your faves!
