Lately, I’ve been finding solace in skin care. There’s something about applying a face mask or trying a new product that feels luxurious to me. My dry, flaky skin begs for a little TLC in the winter. (Sometimes I really miss living in Florida and its humidity, which is basically nature’s moisturizer.) But primarily, setting aside time each night to take care of my skin relaxes me.I’m not alone in this: Many others — including experts — say there are some real mental health perks in a skincare routine. It’s meditative. It’s also a great way to spend time just solely focusing on yourself. Falling asleep and staying asleep can be a challenge for me so I created a bit of routine for myself to help because sleeping is such an important way to recover. About an hour before I get into bed, I take melatonin to help with my occasional sleeplessness. I silence my phone and put my phone in a little black pouch to ensure that the bright light does not disturb me — unplugging is so important!
