No Images? Click here Jennifer Bendery was fired up. Rep. Blake Farenthold, a Texas Republican, had promised to pay back the taxpayer money he spent to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit. But it'd been weeks since he made that promise, and he still hadn't paid back the money.Bendery decided to investigate. We asked her about what she found. How did this story come about?I've been complaining about Blake Farenthold's abuse of power to coworkers for months, so I figured it was time to expand my complaining to the world. Why else have a job like this? You're welcome. What was the hardest part of writing, reporting or editing the piece? The reporting was a bit awkward. I kept asking Republican members of Congress about their colleague having "wet dreams" and "sexual fantasies" about his female aide, and something or other about him preferring that his aide's nipples be visible. Obviously this is a great way to break the ice socially, but when you're bringing this up with a bunch of older white guys in suits in the grandiose hallways of the House of Representatives, you feel kinda like an uncultured devil child. What do you want readers to take away from this? You can run but you can't hide!Love, |
