No Images? Click here About three months after I moved away from my family in Florida, I got some devastating health news about my mom. I’ll never forget her sharing the information with me on the phone as I stood in a gritty subway station waiting for the train. I was stunned.A few seconds after we hung up the phone, the train arrived. Hot tears rolled down my cheeks as I walked onto the subway. The car was packed and I felt like everyone’s eyes were glued on my puffy, red face. I was so overwhelmed I thought I might pass out. About 30 seconds into the ride, a woman gently tapped me on the shoulder. "Honey, would you like to sit down?" she asked. She immediately offered me her seat, and then turned around so her back was facing me. The small gesture of privacy and kindness allowed me to lean into my grief, and I spent the rest of the ride letting my emotions quietly pour out of me. By the time I reached my stop, I was able to pull myself together enough to walk home and call the rest of my family.Thankfully, my mom is in excellent health now. But that heart-shattering moment will forever stick with me — and so will the compassion of that stranger on the train. That little display of kindness meant everything to me in that moment.Don’t you want to read more stories like this? I know I do. That’s why we’re launching The Good Kind, a collection of stories about the unexpected kindness people have received from strangers.I want to hear your experiences, no matter how big or small they might be.
