Republicans went heavy on "sanctuary city" scare-mongering in a Florida special election today, and just like it did in Virginia, it flopped: Democrat Margaret Wood fairly easily won a race for a state House seat in a district that Trump had carried by six. Here's our story on the GOP strategy.
This is, per Daily Kos, the 36th district Democrats have flipped since Trump was elected.
Two pretty fun updates to stories I sent out yesterday:
First, on the West Virginia woman, Lissa Lucas, who was thrown out of the legislature for reading off fossil-fuel donors to state representatives. Lucas, running for a House of Delegates seat, had raised around $4,000 before yesterday. She's now pulled in $50,360. By the time you read this, it'll probably be more; you can watch it rise here.
Zaid Jilani interviewed her about her record-setting, accidental burst of fundraising.
Second, in a stunning about-face, Democrats in the Virginia House of Delegates found six Republicans willing to buck Dominion Energy and shut down their effort to gouge consumers. Story here.
And the Rob Porter story continues to engulf the White House. Today FBI Director Chris Wray said the bureau had alerted the White House about the situation as early as March of last year. I went on the Young Turks today to talk about the timeline and the reporting behind it.
Also, as you'll see in the video, I got a haircut. This email grows by word of mouth. If you enjoy getting it, please forward this note to friends and tell them to sign up to start getting their own copy here. I'm the Washington bureau chief at The Intercept, and I send this several times a week. If you want to contribute directly to help keep the thing running, you can do so here, though be warned a donation comes with no tote bags or extra premium content or anything. Or you can support it by buying a copy of Out of the Ooze: The Story of Dr. Tom Price or Wall Street's White House, the first two books put out by Strong Arm Press, a small progressive publishing house I cofounded.
